Christian’s Room

The design concept for a room begins with a simple idea. It may be a paint color, a light fixture, a rug or a piece of furniture. Here in my son Christian’s room, the idea was always literally staring me in the face whenever I walked into the space. The large window that inspired this design illuminates my entire second floor since this room sits at the end of the upstairs hallway. I imagined the window flanked by bookshelves for years, and thanks to my talented friend and former co-worker Kevin Lein, my vision is now a reality.

Bookshelves, an integral design feature, have garnered colossal attention for the past few years. Take one look at any influencer or designer’s Instagram and you’re sure to see story after story about “how I style my bookshelves.” What were once pieces of wood attached to a wall to hold books—and books alone—are now a showpiece for framed art, ceramics or seasonal decor. And how I love this! The displays can change with the season along with pillows and rugs providing a constant blank canvas that allows us to transform rooms in our home making them feel new again and again.

In Christian’s room, Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy on the bookshelves playfully contrasts with the Swiss Coffee on the walls, perfect for a young man’s private space. The window shades are from tg designs, Chatham, and always-reliable Target is the source for the neutral rug and the desk chair seen below.

Always, always make your home beautiful. It is one of the greatest gifts you can give to those you love.
