Moss

Last year, Americans spent two billion dollars on Valentine’s Day flowers. That is a lot of money to spend on a gift that will not last more than a week. But still, flowers are continually bestowed at their most beautiful, albeit brief moment. And although the enjoyment may not last long, the memory endures. Flowers are the gift that always, without fail, bring a smile to the recipient. There is no need to feign pleasure for the gift is as genuine as the gratitude it yields. But I often think something about this wonderful gift should have staying power, so I always give plants and flowers in beautiful ceramic or stone pots, baskets, or even galvanized metal buckets that can be reused and hopefully trigger the memory of the occasion when it was gifted. I can spend hours at a garden center placing plant after plant into the various containers ensuring the perfect compliment. And then there is always the moss–the pretty green carpet or stringy, fluffy beige strings that hide the gaps between plant and container. Yes, moss is the Band Aid, but it is also the grand finale–the ideal finisher. It is the perfect polish to the potted flower or plant, always at the ready in my home because I just love to give flowers.
