Let There Be Light

When I was  growing up in the late seventies and eighties, I remember that Christmas lights meant big, pointy colorful bulbs. My father would ascend the ladder each December and attach them around the front door and windows of our house. These “retro” lights were replaced with white lights for outdoor lighting by the late eighties, and I didn’t see them again until I worked as a lifestyle editor for a regional magazine. One night in December, I had to drop something off at a colleague’s house, and as I pulled up to her home, I was struck by the colorful bulbs draped along her fence. My memories of Christmas past flooded my mind, and I instantly felt wonderful. The retro lights have made a comeback over the past few years, but simple white lights still dominate for the most part. No matter. It wouldn’t be the Christmas season without lights whether they be colored or white. They make their way around our bushes and trees and frame our homes in anticipation of the season. Personally, I love to bring the lights indoors. White lights set on white wire frame my interior windows and cast a beautiful soft glow throughout the house. I often wish they could stay up all year.
