September Snack

My trip to the farmers’ market this morning provided the inspiration for this treat. Colorful summer bouquets were displaced by buckets of mums, and the last of the peaches were set to the side to make room for an abundance of freshly-picked apples. The pears called out to me because their delicate flavor is a staple in Autumn and Thanksgiving recipes, and I welcome the return of cuisine that accompanies brisk weather. Among the dark green kale, burgundy beets and leafy herbs, tiny bright red strawberries set in their mini baskets popped as if to call shoppers over for one last taste before they are gone for the year. What a contrast to the pears, not only in color, but in the seasons they represent. To combine them in a simple fruit salad seemed the ideal way to transition to fall.
