Linen
My extended family visited the Amalfi coast in the summer of 2016. To say the southern Italian coastline is breathtaking just may be the greatest understatement I have ever heard. Deep blue water, rocky beaches, vines bearing bright chubby lemons, magnificent colorful pottery born from volcanic rock, bubbly cold glasses of Prosecco, platters of soft prosciutto with lush arugula and quaint stone pathways comprise this heaven on earth. I embrace the memories of my boys and nephews swimming in the sea, simple dinners of white fish dressed with olive oil and a discreet town referred to as the “hole in the mountain” by the locals where tears rolled down my face as I tasted pasta made just as my grandmother did long ago.
The trip was also a revelation for me as I discovered my favorite fabric was linen. The shops in Positano boast the most beautiful linen goods: clothing, napkins, tablecloths and bedding. The linen industry took off here in the late fifties, and it’s no wonder. Light sheer linen is the perfect foil to the sultry summertime weather. My son promised to buy me a home set in the rocky mountain of Positano when he gets older; and while that may never happen, I do relish the thought of summers spent in a linen caftan and leather sandals in my old age. Until then, I have a delightful white linen wrap dress that I cherish and linen pillow covers that make their appearance in my home this time of year when I am grasping for signs of springtime. Linen will forever remind me of that summer on the Amalfi coast—the summer before my first son went off to college and the last vacation our family would take before my husband passed away from his cancer. It remains for me the most heavenly place, a beautiful moment in my life and a perfect memory.
