The Ginger Jar

The ginger jar hails from the Ming Dynasty of China. These beautiful vessels transported salt, oil and eventually spices thus earning their moniker from the wonderful fragrant ginger that often filled them. A testament to the craftsmanship and pottery-making skills of the Chinese, the jars were made by the masses for the exports, and soon, the Europeans desired them as much for their beauty as for the precious goods they carried within.

The once utilitarian ginger jars now serve as decorative elements in our homes. They flank mirrors on fireplace mantles, are set on tables, shelves and buffets and are glorified when fresh flowers pour out of them. While beautiful prints adorned the ancient ginger jars, the ones designed by Lauren Haskell for her online shop Lo Home caught my eye for their atypical pastel colors. Lauren’s  jars feature delicate brush strokes, white stripes, gold accents, soft leopard prints and even monograms for an utterly perfect gift. But those colors! Powder blue, pale yellow, and pastel pink, lavender and green entice especially now that it is spring. Each one is made to order, but trust me, these beauties are worth the wait.
